The story:

Our story today is a story that has become an example of the intensity and magnificence of what it contains. It is one of the most beautiful and funny stories that you will ever read…

“Abu Qasim Al-Tanbouri” is the hero of today’s story. He was one of the well-known merchants in ancient Baghdad. Despite his extreme wealth, he was known for his stinginess, even towards himself. He was famous for many of the anecdotes that were known about him, and perhaps the most famous of them is his story with his shoes, which caused him countless troubles!

The story of the tanbouri and his famous shoes:

It is said that Abu Al-Qasim Al-Tanbouri had a shoe. Whenever it broke, Abu Al-Qasim would repair it by putting a patch of leather, or sometimes cloth, on it. Because of the many repairs that were made to the shoe, it became full of leather patches. His story became famous among the people, and it even became a proverb that was used among them, and they would say: (Heavier than Al-Tanbouri’s shoe)!

When it came to the tanbouri, he wanted to get rid of his shoes immediately. I wish he hadn’t done that! Because he only got into trouble with every attempt to get rid of them. The first attempt was that he threw the shoes in the trash near his house. While on his way home, he admired a bottle of perfume and bought it for himself. As soon as he returned home, he put the bottle of perfume on one of the shelves in his house. Suddenly, a man passed by the trash and noticed the tanbouri’s shoes (they were famous and well-known among all people). He picked them up and threw them out of the window of the tanbouri’s house, thinking that one of the naughty children had thrown them in the trash to joke with the tanbouri. Suddenly, the shoe hit the bottle of perfume and it fell to the ground, broken into very small pieces.

When the tanbouri player saw it, he became very angry. He picked up the shoe again in a second attempt to get rid of it, so he threw it into the river. Then, a fisherman found it and went with it to the tanbouri player himself, who gave him his shoe!

The tanbouri player put the shoe on the roof to dry off, and suddenly a cat came and carried the shoe in its mouth, thinking it was a fish (because the smell of fish emanated from the river). When the tanbouri player saw it, he scolded it for that, so it picked it up and ran away with the shoe from the tanbouri and started jumping over the roofs of the houses, and suddenly the shoe fell on a pregnant woman who was one of the tanbouri’s neighbors, causing her to miscarry.

Her husband took the tanbouri's shoes and went to the judge to complain about him. The judge ordered the tanbouri to pay blood money for the fetus that was lost because of his shoes and that he had harmed his neighbors, so he punished him for doing all of that. Then the judge returned the shoes to him again!

The tanbouri player was upset with his shoes, so he wanted to get rid of them at any cost, so this time he threw them into the sewer. The sewer overflowed with dirty water two days after the tanbouri player threw his shoes into it, so people complained about the matter, so the repairmen came to clean the blocked drain, and they discovered the reason behind all of this: the tanbouri’s shoes!

They complained about him to the judge, who ordered him to be imprisoned as a result of his action, and ordered him to be flogged as well and the shoe returned to him. He became furious, and whenever he wanted to get rid of his shoe, he would get into trouble. This time, he decided to get rid of it once and for all as soon as he got out of prison. He ordered him to dig a hole when night fell over the city and bury the shoe inside it and get rid of it once and for all. However, some of the neighbors saw him and complained about him to the police, thinking that he wanted to steal. The judge ordered him to be imprisoned again and returned his shoe to him!

As soon as the judge ordered him to leave prison, he went to the public baths, left his shoes and walked away in an attempt to get rid of them. However, it happened that the prince was in the public bath and someone stole the prince’s shoes. In order to find out who the thief was and punish him, they had no choice but to wait to discover who the last shoe left in the bath belonged to, believing that it was the thief who took the prince’s shoes and left his own. Of course, the last shoe belonged to the tambouri!

The judge sentenced him to prison on charges of stealing the prince's shoe. He came up with the last solution he could to get rid of his ill-fated shoe, so he decided to bury the shoe in a desert outside of Baghdad. As soon as he started digging, guards attacked him and took him to prison, this time on charges of killing a man they found dead in the same place!

He faced many difficulties and hardships until he was able to deny the accusation against him of killing a man he did not know at all. Once he proved his innocence before the judge and the judge ordered his release, Al-Tanbouri asked the judge to write him a deed of innocence from his shoes for the troubles and hardships they had caused him that almost cost him his entire life.

Indeed, the judge sympathized with him and wrote him a deed to that effect. The tambourine shoe became an example of anything ominous that could not be gotten rid of, and it was said: (like the tambourine shoe)!
